10ct Gold St Brigids Cross Pendant.This item includes an 18" 10ct yellow gold chain.

St. Brigid `Mary of the Gaels'. Born in mid fifth century and buried at Downpatrick besides St.Patrick and St.Colmcille. Brigid built the first Irish Convent beside a giant oak tree ż this place became known as the Church og the Oak - Cill Dara, or Kildare as it is known today. Daughter of a pagan chieftan - a stubborn unbeliever, before his death Brigid sat by him in prayer and whiled away the time by weaving the first St.Brigids Cross from the rushes strewn about the floor. Her father seeing the cross asked her to explain its meaning and overwhelmed, became a Christian before his death. The St.Brigids Cross is still made in Ireland today,and placed in cottages and out offices on her feast day - February 1st - the day on which she died about 524A.D. It is believed that this emblem protects the home and animals from evil and want.
